The 27th of this month marks the second anniversary of the white tornado’s attack on our town, Baxter Springs. In this part of the country, fear grips many this time of year knowing severe storms brew quickly. With tornadoes, warning prevents loss of life, but there are losses much more destructive, yet lie below the surface, undetected.
Today, I’d like to expose these hidden losses. My intent is to raise awareness so you can change your focus from passive to active. It isn’t to share my opinions or impose my beliefs. (WARNING: These truths will stir up emotions)
Now that my disclaimers are out of the way, let’s get on with the list.
1. Respect
Remember the days when manners were used? Me too. What happened? Respect for others and self was lost right before our eyes. Did we quit paying attention? Did parents quit teaching and expecting it of their children? Did the family unit fall apart altogether? If we knew the answer, it wouldn’t be hidden.
2. Responsibility
My friend wrote a song, “I’m Not Responsible.” Can’t tell much difference between Adam and Eve in the garden and Americans today. It’s always someone else’s fault…if you don’t believe me, just ask anyone. Nothing is ever an accident, let alone a mistake WE make. Being responsible for our own actions is another hidden loss that disappeared under our noses.
3. Rights
Hidden even deeper, though, is the rights being taken away without our knowledge. We believe we have freedom of speech. Ever heard of hate crimes? Business owners believe they can hire who they want. What about discrimination, minimum wage, imposed insurance on employees, plus many more conditions? We believe we should be able to see any doctor and get second opinions, but that depends on what insurance you can afford. We believe we own our houses when buying them. Ever heard of eminent domain, real estate taxes and building codes? Try protecting your home or family.
Tell me if I’m wrong, but is something wrong when animals have more rights than children, and criminals have more rights than victims? And now, less than 4% of our population wants to make us use the family restrooms in order to feel safe. Sorry, guys, but the truth is trans-genders have already been using whatever restroom their new
identity is without any problems. Attempting to draw attention to the rights they already have, opens the door to pedophiles and your teenage sons to dress like a girl to get a thrill.
Every “right” of a group strips away someone else’s right and rarely is for the good of the majority. We need to think things through before hopping on the bandwagon. Proposers of most groups are banking on us not to think or to feel everyone should have equal rights.
4. Compassion
Love and compassion have been slowly eroding in our culture and our church. Instead of loving and serving our neighbors and winning the lost, churches became caught up in being the biggest and fanciest, or running the newest, hottest programs. As a result, churches are becoming extinct. Long revivals reduced to short ones or none at all.
Three services a week and Sunday schools are almost obsolete. Money sent to foreign missions eased consciences while loving your neighbor turned to snub or judging your neighbor. Immorality and hatred grew without experiencing God’s love. Do you believe if everyone calling themselves Christians acted like Jesus our churches would be dying?
Hurting people yearn real answers. They detect sincerity overhype.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 1 [NLT] But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
5. Time
Do you have unfulfilled expectations or dreams? Time passes us by while seeking mates, careers, then families and making a living. Before you know it, your kids are raised and you realize you didn’t teach them to memorize scripture the way you planned. The lyrics to “The Cat’s in the Cradle” rings true to life too many times. We spend more time reacting than goal-setting and fulfilling them.
Instead, take time to realize your purpose and leave a legacy. CHANGE your FOCUS and you will CHANGE your WORLD!
These losses are now visible…what are you going to do about it? I’d love to hear your reactions AND ideas in the comments below. Join the conversation.
