What would we do without God and His Word? It gives so much peace and assurance in times of uncertainty. I’m so excited to share a guest post today, written by my knight in shining armor, Pastor Steve Fellers. May its truths speak to your heart. If you like it, maybe I can get him to do more down the line. Stay safe!
I can remember as a child in elementary school hearing the teacher try her best to teach us to pay attention to the railroad crossings. They used the slogan, “Stop, Look, and Listen,” to help us to catch on. Hearing the saying repeatedly probably did help save my life.
This slogan caused me to give heed to the train tracks when approaching them. Those of you in my age bracket will remember they did not have the lights and crossbars at many of the railroad crossings during our childhood. Stopping, looking and listening was important.
The Importance to Stop, Look, and Listen
It also taught me to pause and pay attention to many other aspects of life.
In the times we live in today, very seldom are we teaching children or any other age group, to slow down. Today’s culture emphasizes going full speed at all times and in every regard. The attitude is, we must get what we want before the next person does.
Children begin at an early age to demand electronics, smartphones, and other types of gaming devices. Many adults will just let them have whatever they ask for. Neither side follows the stop, look and listen rule. No warning of a possible train wreck in the future. No advice to wait just a little bit. No stopping and taking a look at some of these things. Thereby, teaching them whatever they demand they get.
The teacher in our class would tell us the possible danger of the oncoming train. She would lecture the whole class that if we just ran across without stopping, looking, or listening, the danger could be deadly. Pausing, taking that little bit of time, could make a lifetime or eternal difference.
Teachers would also explain how big the trains were, how long it took for them to stop, and not to get too close if the train was already going by. What they taught was good instruction, worthy of listening to and acting upon. Necessary for our well-being.
Sometimes, it seemed inconvenient to me.
There were many times I would think, I have heard this all before, I don’t need to hear it again. The real truth was, repetition allowed me to get it from my head to my heart. Becoming something I believed.
Pastors, Sunday School teachers, Christian parents, and all Christian leaders have a responsibility to teach the young children and young Christians that many times we need to Stop, Look and Listen when dealing with the choices of our life.
Yes, like the children, we may be in a hurry, but that does not mean we should run across the track of life without pausing to listen. Life’s dangers may be getting there at the same time as we do. It may be coming around one of life’s curves and we don’t see it till it is upon us. Stopping to look, and pausing to listen, can and will save us from many heartaches and troubles in this life as we try to serve God.
Be still and wait.
Several verses remind us to be still and wait. (NLT version)
Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him.
Psalms 62:5 (NLT)
Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.
Psalms 46:10 (NLT)
Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.
Psalms 37:7 (NLT)
When you take heed to God’s instructions, you will have life more abundantly.
