Christians mature at different rates, but we all start out as babies. Have you wondered why some never grow up at all?
After salvation, we’re supposed to worship, witness, pray, study God’s Word, and serve Christ.
Fear, a lack of knowledge, or spending more time in one area of growth than another can stunt our spiritual growth. It’s the following 5 roadblocks, though, that can keep us focused on the wrong things to the point we remain immature. Satan shoves roadblocks in front of our faces, blocking our vision. Often, we focus on the roadblock instead of how to remove it, get around, or over it.
Have you encountered these roadblocks in your Christian walk?
- Possessions
- Power
- Position
- Past
- Problems
1. Possessions
In America, it appears our greatest blessing of wealth has also been a curse of sorts. The greed monster has many focusing on buying the best, the most, and the newest. Even the poor seek after possessions, whether they buy them new, used, or have to beg, it’s what they seek after.
When you seek to gain possessions more than you seek growing in and serving Christ, then it’s a roadblock in your relationship with Him.
How important is it to gain possessions to you?
2. Power
Many men and women alike crave power and control. They want to be the “top dog” reigning over their circle of influence, especially their
families. The poor or illiterate aren’t’ exempt here either. Most people desiring power are afraid to surrender their fear and control to Jesus. His desire is for us to be humble and let His power flow through us.
3. Position
What’s your title? Is that the first thing you tell someone upon meeting them? If so, your focus could be on position. Do you feel having a position validates who you are? Or, are you equally comfortable without one?
Titles can be helpful, but they don’t need to replace knowing our position in Christ. We’re a child of the King of Kings. It’s not our titles, positions, or status that put jewels in our heavenly crowns, but how many we lead to Christ. Let God be your affirmation and may you strive for heavenly jewels.
4. Past
Another roadblock interfering more often than not is the past.
The longer we’ve been Christians, the easier it becomes to live in the past…talking only about how God used to move as if telling war stories, or how the church used to be. People who live in the past fight change. They also miss out on present opportunities to follow God’s purpose for their lives.
5. Problems
Real problems come along in our life. It’s easy for any of us to focus on them. We need to remember that we can cast our cares on Jesus because He cares for us. Instead of complaining to each other, take them to the Lord in prayer. Besides, if you’re talking, you’re not listening.
Trust the Lord with your problems for He is the true Problem-Solver.
The bottom line is if we don’t see Jesus in the line of our vision somewhere, then we’re staring headlong into a roadblock… stunting our growth. We must seek first the kingdom of God and all other things will be added. If we seek ways to serve Christ to grow in Him, and to obey His will, then we’ll be able to conquer any roadblock trying to hinder us. Focus on Christ to grow spiritually. Avert your eyes from possessions, power, position, past, or problems.
What are some other roadblocks you can think of to add to this list?
