After talking with several different people we thought we would serve 15-20 meals per night. Before even thinking about buying restaurant supplies like pots and pans, though, or announcing our intentions, we needed $400, we didn’t have, for the health certification. Planning on doing this feat ourselves, we tried to think of a way to earn the money. Instead, the next day, without sharing our hearts with anyone, a money miracle happened, confirming to us we should definitely follow through.
Ever since, God has performed miracle after miracle. People in the community heard what we were doing, and flocked to volunteer. Those we fed soon exceeded our original findings. We went from making two casseroles to twelve per night, and, finally, oven roasters were necessary. With Steve being bi-vocational, my home educating our youngest, finding inexpensive food, teaching new volunteers, adapting to growing pains, fundraising simply wasn’t feasible.
God has miraculously provided EVERY NEED along this wonderful, exciting (sometimes scary) journey. Whether Word in Action Ministries feeds 3,000 meals per month, or 6,000, the way we did between 2011 and 2014, God has miraculously provided food, money, and assistance. After all, only $500 per month is pledged, and to date, there hasn’t been any government grants.
Desiring to record each miracle from the beginning, my visual impairment halted my efforts, even with special magnifying equipment, called a CCTV. Two years later, a whole new world emerged for me. My husband discovered an affordable screen reader for computers. I hadn’t used a computer in over 15 years. This also gave me the ability to pursue another lost dream…writing.
My husband found a Christian writers group in the area. I joined. Learning how to write devotions and short stories was my intent. After all, people needed to know God still did miracles to show the depth of His love, and to be glorified.
I dreamed of submitting a devotion here or there, or a story in Chicken Soup or Guidepost, at best. Maybe, someone would pick up the story of God’s ministry, and write a book about it. Then, at a writers’ conference, God spoke to my heart, instructing me to write our story. That was four years ago. Since, I have dug in the recesses of my memory banks to jot down miracles, along with soaking in information about writing, editing, or publishing.
Last summer, I took advantage of a free coaching session from Rebecca Thesman. After speaking with her, I knew writing a miracle series was the place to start. You see, in the process of writing down miracles from our ministry, I also recalled numerous others in our marriage, and our childhood.
In January, I hired Miss Rebecca to coach me to reach this goal. My first memoir will be the miracles in Steve and I’s lives as a child that built our faith to be able to trust God with this ministry He so graciously endowed us with. It will also contain the miracles leading up to the founding of Word in Action’s Community Dinners.
I would covet your prayers as I continue to write blogs, the stories for the book, and our ministry newsletter. Pray for clarity, few distractions, and speed. From time to time, I will share excerpts here.
