Through the ages in word and actions church members often believe the minister, preacher, pastor doesn’t do much. After all he only preaches three sermons a week, they conclude. Maybe that’s your believe too. I’m here to report – you decide.
Here are some of the things I hear pastors report doing:
- Visiting the sick in the hospital
- Awakes in the middle of the night to be with someone in the emergency room
- Unstops the toilet in the restroom 30 minutes before church starts
- Fixes a flat for one of the senior women stranded on the side of the road
- Delivers food baskets personally to shut-ins
- Meets the police late at night when a rock busts out a window of the church
- Coordinates building projects running to and fro buying materials and then hammers nails himself
- Is up all night with his own children running high fever, then drives the kids bus, teaches Sunday school class, preaches Sunday morning sermon, and does nursing home service that afternoon. Then returns for evening service just as excited as he was that morning.
- Drives a member of his congregation to the airport, and pays for their flight to attend a funeral of their family member
- Has to find a replacement driver to take the kids to church camp because a family member is passing away. Simultaneously, he has to fix the brakes going out on his car and pack for a mission trip that can’t be delayed.
- Mows the churchyard before his own in the summer and shovels the snow off of the parking lot in the winter.
If you believe your pastor does more than preach sermons behind the pulpit, then you might let them know how much you appreciate them even if it isn’t Pastor Appreciation Month.

Hello Jena!
My Pastor, who happens to be your loving husband is the most incredible pastor I have ever sat under in leadership as my pastor or worked with in ministry! His compassionate heart for people, his heart for God and his continual enthusiasm for serving the Lord are unmatched in my book! His work load is phenomenal but I’ve never heard him complain one time! An amazing and selfless man of God!
